Modernising and Preparing for the Future

New regulations, international formats, and rapid technological advancements are transforming the payments market. As part of this transformation, Sweden's payment infrastructure is being modernised and future-proofed — and Bankgirot plays a key role in this important shift.

A Bankgiro system for the future
Bankgirot plays a central role by both maintaining today’s payment system and building the system of tomorrow.

We ensure that:

  • today’s Bankgiro system continues to operate reliably and as usual,
  • the next generation Bankgiro system follows international standards and Swedish regulations,
  • the technical platform meets future requirements for security, scalability, and innovation,
  • our customers (banks, payment institutions, and e-money institutions) have the right conditions to offer efficient payment services to their customers.

A Foundation for Development and Innovation
The goal is to create a future-proof Bankgiro system that strengthens innovation, regulatory compliance, and development – primarily for our customers. In turn, they can develop tailored services for their own customers.

In the long term, all participants in the payments market will have better opportunities to streamline their processes through standardised payment formats.

Step-by-Step Development
We are moderniSing the Bankgiro system mainly by introducing new products based on international standards. These new products are primarily used by banks to manage payments between accounts at different banks. The banks then create their own services for their customers.

As a result, several of Bankgirot’s existing products will be phased out.

Ensuring that both Bankgirot and our customers comply with current and upcoming regulations is essential. Within the next few years, the Bankgiro system will fully comply with the Nordic Payment Council rulebook, which is based on the ISO 20022 standard.

The development is taking place step by step over the coming years in close cooperation with the banks and institutions connected to the system.

Migration of Payment Flows During 2026
In 2025, we developed a new product, SEK Credit Transfer. SEK Credit Transfer handles transactions between banks and institutions. Banks connected to the Bankgiro system are now joining this new product and will gradually migrate their payment flows during 2026.

The goal is that all payments – except Autogiro payments – will have been migrated to the new product by the end of 2026.

Bankgirot and the banks are working closely together to ensure a secure and smooth transition.

Several Bankgiro Products Will Be Phased Out in 2026
With new technical capabilities and a unified international standard, banks can develop and offer more tailored services to their customers. Therefore, several Bankgiro products will be replaced by bank services no later than autumn 2026. The exact timing depends on each bank’s individual plan.

The following Bankgiro products will no longer be available after 2026:

  • Leverantörsbetalningar (Supplier Payments)
  • Bg Lön (Salary Payments)
  • Bankgiro Värdeavi (Value Vouchers)
  • Bankgiro Inbetalningar (Incoming Payments), including Image file formats (Bildfil)

The transition to bank services also means that it will no longer be possible to send or retrieve payment files and reporting directly to or from Bankgirot for these products.
Going forward, file communication and payment services will instead be provided through the respective bank.

Autogiro and E-invoice Will Remain
Bankgirot’s products Autogiro and E-invoice will not be affected by the changes during 2026. These products, including their file communication, will continue to operate as usual until further notice.

Work to modernise Autogiro is ongoing in cooperation with the banks. Regulatory compliance remains a key focus. The ambition is also to make Autogiro simpler and more efficient to use over time.
